Catholic Bible Institute

The CBI is administered through the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, CA.

Overview:

The Catholic Bible Institute (CBI-Orange) is a three-year program that involves a comprehensive study of the Sacred Scriptures, with particular focus on methods of biblical study, sharing and praying with scripture, and application of skills in Bible-study leadership.
 

  • YEAR ONE (Fall 2019 – Spring 2020) includes an introduction to the New Testament, with study of the four Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, Pauline Letters, Catholic Epistles, Book of Revelation, Non-canonical Writings, and New Testament Theology.
     

  • YEAR TWO (Fall 2020 – Spring 2021) includes an overview of the Hebrew Scriptures, with study of the following texts: Pentateuch/Torah, Historical Books, Prophetic Writings, Wisdom Literature, Deutero-canonical Writings, and Hebrew Theology.
     

  • YEAR THREE (Fall 2021 – Spring 2022) combines instruction with a Practicum that focuses on developing skills for working with small groups, with an emphasis on adult learning, facilitation skills, group process, Bible-study resources, and leadership training.

 

CBI Program Goals:

  • To grow in understanding and appreciation of the revealed Word of God.

  • To learn the principles of Catholic interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures.

  • To integrate Bible-study with Christian prayer and daily living.

  • To receive training for parish-based Bible study leadership.

 

CBI Enrollment Options:

  • Certification: Satisfactory completion of all requirements for all six semesters.

  • Enrichment: Participation in Year One and/or Year Two, without earning a certificate.

General Information:

  • The CBI will run a total of six semesters (first cohort from Fall 2013 to Spring 2016; second cohort from Fall 2016 to Spring 2019; third cohort from Fall 2019 to Spring 2022).

  • Sessions take place one Saturday each month, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Rosary Academy in Fullerton, CA

  • Tuition is $220 for each of the first five semesters. The sixth/last semester has a reduced charge to cover expenses related to the team projects, one wrap-up session, and the graduation ceremony.

  • Tuition assistance is available to qualified applicants. Schedules and tuition rates are subject to change. Please check this website for updates.

  • If you wish to drop the program, you must notify the LIS office in writing (via email is acceptable).  Our refund policy is as follows: 

    • Notification one week or more in advance                    Full Refund

    • Notification up to the day before the first session       $50 cancelation fee; remainder refunded

    • Notification before the second session on Oct. 19       50% Refund

    • Notification after Oct. 19                                                   No Refund

  • All sessions will be audio-recorded. Participants who are absent for any session are expected to listen to the recordings, so they can still complete the monthly assignments on time.​

How to Register:

  • Write a short “Statement of Intent” (only one page) saying why you wish to enroll in the Catholic Bible Institute and what you hope to get out of it.

  • Certification Candidates: Obtain a Letter of Recommendation from a member of your parish staff (Pastor, Deacon, Faith Formation Director, or similar position).

  • Fill out the registration form on the back of the registration form here, and mail it to LIS, or register and pay below.  

  • Before July 1, 2019:  Enroll now to reserve your space.  No payment required yet. 

  • After July 1, 2019: Please include your payment for the first semester ($220).
