Letter from the Executive Director

Summertime, and the Living Is

Although our social foundations in the United States are no longer enmeshed with our earlier agrarian roots, there is still a dynamic energy attached to summertime. For the most part, our educational systems still adhere to a calendar that was designed to free up young people to help with tending the crops as they emerged from the fields, or vines, or trees. As a result of this historical residue, our recreational time, our family vacations, and our time to ‘get away’ tend to reside in our imaginations as a summertime reality.

We have now crossed the threshold of the summer solstice, and despite the reality that we spend ever more time indoors, and separate from the ‘growing world’ of flourishing nature, there is still a subliminal urge for an adventure, an escape, a ‘road trip.’ Perhaps we might channel these impulses during the summer months to include a visit to a place, a community, that stretches our boundaries, and helps us to see the world through a wider lens. This doesn’t require thousand-dollar plane fares, or 3 pullman suitcases. Sometimes the diversity of the world lies close at hand. As nature blossoms around us in a treasure-trove of colors, scents, and flavors, we can claim a respite from our ‘normal’ concepts of summer fun to include cultures, cuisines, social practices, and even spiritual venues that can refresh and expand our horizons. Having celebrated the power and joy of Pentecost, we may learn to ‘speak’ to others whose ‘idiom’ (and even language!) differs from our own.

Pollination can occur in many forms, far beyond the buzzing labors of bees. Our summer journeys could help to seed a unique harvest of experiences that we can carry into our autumn and winter remembrances of what 2017 has brought into our lives. May your summer adventures help to enrich your experience of God through the abundant diversity of creation, in all its forms!

Blessings to all.

ISFP & PFEI Graduation

Thirty-two students graduated from the Ignatian Spiritual Formation Program (ISFP) and the Programa de Formación Espiritual Ignaciana (PFEI) on Sunday, June 5, 2017.  The graduation is the culmination of three years of study in Ignatian Spirituality, prayer, leadership, and the Spiritual Exercises according to the 19th Annotation.  All of the graduates are now designated as LIS Associates.

We are very proud of them for their commitment and hard work over the last three years.   ISFP class speaker, Odion Okojie spoke about the difference that LIS has made in his life, specifically in helping him grow closer to God through prayer and serving others. Gloria Espinoza spoke on behalf of the PFEI group.  She spoke about how participating in PFEI changed her life.  She expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in the program, her colleagues, and family.

25 Years a Priest

Fr. David Robinson, S.J., celebrated 25 years of priesthood on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.  The celebration included a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Sacred Heart Chapel and a wonderful luncheon with friends.

He was ordained on June 6, 1996 in the Church of St. Ignatius in San Francisco.

During the homily he likened his calling to the Jesuits to the calling of young Samuel.  Three distinct times, he sensed God calling him; he responded with generosity, and his life was never the same again.

Everyone at LIS is grateful to God for his ministry and for all he does to bring us into deeper relationship with God.
