provides an opportunity each spring to celebrate the work of
Loyola Institute for Spirituality and to honor those who have contributed to LIS in many different ways.

The new province of the Jesuits West was formed July 2017 by merging the California and Oregon provinces. LIS wanted to pay tribute to the Jesuits and their absolutely essential contributions to the vitality and inspiration of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality from its earliest origins. This pastoral vehicle in Orange County offers the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in a variety of forms for the transformation and formation of disciples for Christ and for spreading the Good News of the Gospel.

Jesuits West, under the leadership of provincial, Fr. Scott Santarosa, S.J., serves the ten Western states of the United States and is a broad network of approximately 100 ministries and works offering education through universities, high schools and elementary and Nativity schools; Ignatian spirituality through parishes and retreat and spirituality centers; help and guidance to the poor and marginalized through social ministries; education and training for the next generations of Jesuit priests and brothers; and care of senior and infirm Jesuits who have dedicated their lives to the service of others.

“We're trying to force ourselves to creatively respond to new needs that the world is presenting us and new ways of serving the Lord," Fr. Santarosa said.

Fr. Hauser, is a native of Milwakee, Wisconsin.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1955 and was ordained a priest in 1968. He holds degrees in philosophy, history, and religion. Fr. Hauser is the author of three books: In His Spirit: A Guide to Today's Spirituality (Paulist Press, 1982), Moving in the Spirit: Becoming a Contemplative in Action (Paulist Press, 1986), and Finding God in Troubled Times (Loyola Press, 2002).
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Fr. Dick Hauser, S.J., the recipient of the Writer's Award in Spirituality at this year's Hearts on Fire.
Fr. Hauser was born June 22, 1937 and entered eternal life on Monday, April 3rd after a quick decline with aggressive cancer, diagnosed a couple months ago.

Our sadness is met with hope and trust in God's unwavering love during this Easter season; we hold his brother, sisters, and all who mourn him in our prayers.
A dear friend of Fr. Hauser, his brother, and sister will be present at Hearts on Fire to accept the Writer's Award in Spirituality. We invite you to join us at Hearts on Fire to honor the life and legacy of Fr. Dick Hauser, S.J.

Hearts on Fire Award
The Board of Directors of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS) created the Hearts on Fire (HoF) Award in 2003 to annually recognize outstanding Christians whose contributions to spirituality, community service, and Christian leadership have been inspired by their formation in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Spiritual Exercises form the basis of the Institute’s vision, mission, and broad array of multicultural and ecumenical services and programs. The award is bestowed by the Loyola Institute at its annual fundraising dinner celebration held in the Spring.
Four criteria are used to select the award recipient(s). First, the candidate must be formed in Ignatian spirituality. Second, the candidate must exemplify the Ignatian ideal of finding God in all things, i.e., live the Spiritual Exercises on a daily basis. Third, the candidate must be engaged in the service of faith to others. And fourth, the candidate’s sphere of influence must be one which is compatible with Ignatian ideals and which aligns with the vision and mission of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality.
Writer's Award in Spirituality
In 2005 the LIS Board of Directors created the Writer's Award in Spirituality, to be given to someone who has demonstrated excellence in furthering the spiritual teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola through writing. The Writer’s Award is customarily bestowed along with the HoF Award at the Loyola Institute’s annual fundraising dinner and award ceremony.
