The Full Spiritual Exercises
The Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (19th Annotation Retreat) is offered through the collaboration
of LIS Associates. Retreatants will have individual spiritual guides who will meet
with them on a regular basis. Interviews for the program are held throughout the year.
Retreats
LIS regularly schedules weekend and longer retreats on request from groups and organizations.
They are concentrated on days of spiritual enrichment with presentations focusing on
listening and responding to God's personalized invitation to draw closer to Him
and those around you. Considerable time is dedicated to individual and communal
prayer. Periods of silence are encouraged for full and deep reflection. Usually
there is an opportunity to share one’s thoughts and feelings that the Lord
inspires within you. One or more liturgies are celebrated. Retreat facilitators
make themselves available for personal conversation and/or reconciliation.
Retreats conducted by LIS are held at various retreat centers throughout Southern California
and beyond. For example, LIS has collaborated for many years with the Mary and Joseph Retreat
Center in Rancho Palos Verdes and with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in offering retreats during
the month of August.
Conferences and Days of Prayer
These are half or whole days of spiritual enrichment centered on a theme. The program usually
includes one or two presentations and discussions, participation in spiritual exercises
including individual and communal prayer, time for silent prayer, and the
opportunity to share reflections in small and/or large group settings. LIS also
offers a number of special conferences on prayer, discernment, social justice,
biblical spirituality, and other spiritual themes throughout the year. These events can be tailored
to the particular group being served.
Workshops
Workshops are one or more sessions of varying length which include presentation and discussion
of aspects of spirituality that one can beneficially explore for considerable time.
Experiential components are usually included. Workshop issues include, but are
not limited to: prayer, discernment, forgiveness, finding God in all things,
Ignatian spirituality, scripture, ministry/work, marriage, family,
friendship, freedom, values, social teachings of the Church, community,
sacraments, and liturgy.
Parish Retreats/Missions
Every year LIS offers numerous parish retreats or missions. For
three to five evenings in one week, hundreds of parishioners gather for input on themes
from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola (such as the
first principle and foundation, divine love, prayer, sin and reconciliation, spiritual
discernment, and finding God in all things). Retreats focusing on biblical or
liturgical spirituality are also available.
Hispanic Spiritual Leadership Program (Equipo Latino Ignaciano)
Many researchers are in agreement regarding the importance that faith,
religion, and spirituality play in the lives of Latinos. As Latinos become
increasingly active in leadership roles in both church and society, there
is a need to address the spiritual aspects of leadership. The ELI program, which
is conducted in Spanish, takes a core group of Hispanic lay leaders through an intensive
three-year formation program to acquaint them with the fundamentals of Ignatian spirituality
and give them hands-on experiences in the coordination of retreats.
Ignatian Spiritual Formation Program
The ISFP is an opportunity to form laity to work side-by-side with the LIS staff in spiritual
ministries such as giving retreats, conferences, and workshops. This Program is offered
to those who desire to begin or have already begun to exercise some form of spiritual
ministry but are looking for further growth and expertise. The ISFP is composed
of three parts, each of which take approximately one year. The first-year courses, however,
are open to all, even if they may not be interested in the full three-year program.
Diaconate Programs
LIS provides annual retreats and other spiritual formation components for the permanent Deacons
and Diaconate Candidates of the Diocese of Orange, the Diocese of San Diego, the Diocese of Las
Vegas, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Biblical Programs
LIS is now able to offer a wider variety of biblical, liturgical, and
theological programs
for parishes, dioceses, and other groups, in addition to continuing to offer our
various spiritual services. Many scriptural and theological topics are possible,
especially those related to the Liturgical Seasons and/or the Lectionary Year.
For example, a focus on the Gospel of John would be especially appropriate
during the Lent or Easter Seasons; the Gospel Passion Narratives would be
helpful in preparing for Holy Week, while exploring the Acts of the Apostles
would be more appropriate during the weeks of Easter.
